What We’ve Been Up To

  • The week or two before Christmas, I had to go into what I call “self-preservation mode.” Self-preservation mode is always triggered by being so busy at work that I have to work several weekends in a row. Self-preservation mode involves me being really selfish with my time (essentially all work and no play). Andy hates that mode because he doesn’t see me as much and has to help out more around the house. I skipped writing a Christmas letter this year because of self-preservation mode. Thankfully, things slowed down now that Christmas is over.
  • It was a busy Christmas weekend. My good friend from law school, Kevin, got married near San Francisco, CA on December 23rd. You may remember Kevin from our wedding (he had the honorable job of coat taker). I was one of Kevin’s 3 groomsmen. So, we flew to California Wednesday night and didn’t sleep a wink on the flight. Thursday morning we toured Alcatraz and the Fisherman’s Wharf area. Friday we crossed the Golden Gate bridge and think we spotted a migrating whale at a rocky beach. Friday was the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner. Saturday was the wedding. It was a beautiful wedding. We caught a 12:30 a.m. flight home and arrived at 6:00 a.m. on Christmas Eve. Christmas went by far too fast and I ended up feeling disappointed Christmas night that it was already over.
  • I’m already in my 26th week of pregnancy. The baby probably weighs about 2 pounds and is probably about 15 inches long. I just want him to keep growing so that I don’t have to worry about him so much.
  • We picked out a first name and have the middle name narrowed down to two possibilities. We’re keeping the name a surprise.
  • Andy and my parents are going to paint the walls in the baby’s room this weekend. We’re hoping to convince Andy’s mom to help him with painting the trim soon thereafter. If I could safely paint during pregnancy, the job would have been done months ago!

Buy the Book!

Andy and Jessica: Volume One is out.

Jessica asked me, as a gift for our second wedding anniversary, to print off all of the posts to date for her so that she could compile a book archiving this blog. I viewed that as too small of a gift, and wanted to give her something much better. Instead of simply printing the posts to date, I have compiled a book, which I am self-publishing and making available to all (but first to Jessica of course). It is complete with pictures, though I haven’t figured out how to publish the clickable links.

I am writing this on November 30th, 2006 but cannot post it until after the New Year, as I don’t want Jessica to know what I have done until she receives the book.

If you are interested in the book, you can find it by going to http://www.cafepress.com/andyandjess/ the cost is $20.00 and all proceeds will go into our firstborn child’s college fund.

It’s a boy!

At the end of an ultrasound that lasted over 30 minutes, the technician was finally comfortable telling us that I am carrying a boy. The little darling had chosen his favorite spot and was not going to move without a fight. I had to switch positions about a dozen times and the technician had to repeatedly jab my abdomen to try to get the baby to change positions. The baby appears to be really healthy. They anticipate that he will be an 8-pound something baby (i.e., bigger than the average baby at this point). Probably smarter and cuter than the average baby too! We’ll post pictures soon.

Early Pregnancy Reflections 3: All Day Sickness

I’ve always prided myself on being a tough girl.  I have always just felt that if I ever happened to get run over by a bus, I would just brush myself off and walk away from it.  I never imagined that I would suffer from morning sickless, let alone all day sickness.  I remember that at about 7-8 weeks pregnant, I was chatting with my red-headed, freckled-faced cousin, Leanna, who called to congratulate me on my pregnancy.  I was bragging about how I wasn’t sick and how I wasn’t going to get sick.  The next morning, pregnancy sickness came on full force.   It was really bad and lasted all day for weeks.  The home remedies recommended by my doctor’s office (Unisom at night, vitamin B-6, ginger snaps, etc.) did not work at all.  It seemed to help a little when I stopped taking my prenatal vitamin in the mornings and stayed away from Total cereal (which contains a lot of iron).  I finally had to go on a prescription drug so that I could keep food down.

A Better Website

My apologies for not getting to this sooner, but I have upgraded the software that runs this site, and installed a much nicer theme. There really is no excuse to use the dull, drab default theme that comes with the blog software when there are wonderful themes like this one available on the internet for free.

Hopefully I’ll remember to change it when winter comes though!

P.S. – It seems that this theme looks crappy in Internet Explorer. However, there is no excuse to be using such a horrible browser. If you are using Internet Explorer, then you need to download Firefox, or if not Firefox, at least get Opera.

Early Pregnancy Reflections 2: The Day We Found Out the Big News

We had bought a package of 3 pregnancy tests. I think it was the First Response brand. I chose it because it is supposed to predict pregnancy before the other tests. It said it was only about 60-some percent accurate at testing pregnancy as early as I took the first test. I took the first test on a Friday night after work. For the two weeks before that, I was acting as if I had indeed gotten pregnant on our first try in July. I was eating super healthy foods, ensuring that I heated up the deli meat sandwiches they feed us during lunch meetings at work, etc. I was crushed to see that the test said I had failed to get pregnant on our first try. In fact, was so mad that I marched down to the kitchen and found some chocolate ice cream with chunks of something delicious and some other junk food that I had been depriving myself of for the last two weeks. I believe I even had a can of pop (another thing I had decided to cut out since I figured I could be pregnant). I gave my poor, darling Andy a rough time. I told him that he had failed to deliver on the one thing I wanted for my 30th birthday. Poor Andy! Well, I spent the next few days acting as if I wasn’t pregnant. On the next Tuesday, we had a lunch meeting scheduled at work and I was sure they would be serving deli meat sandwiches AGAIN. (You see, a pregnant woman should not eat deli meat without heating it up to steaming because it can contain a bacteria that causes the mom to get really sick and the meds to fix the mom are not good for the baby. In fact, the baby can die as a result of this.) I impulsively decided on that Tuesday morning before boarding the bus to work that I would take the test again. I sat the stick down and prayed while waiting that God would draw in two lines. I wasn’t really that optimistic. I was shocked when a second line appeared before my eyes. The second line was dimmer than the first. I thought that meant the test result was inconclusive. I ran down to tell Andy (who was playing on his computer) the news. I said, “Look, Andy, I’m half pregnant.” He jerked back in his computer chair and asked with an alarmed voice, “Did you draw that in?” (No, buddy, I’m not that desperate.) He then read the instructions and we learned that the indicator line is often dimmer than the other line. So, that day I heated up my sandwich at work. I re-tested the next day, again with a positive result.

Early Pregnancy Reflections 1: Fertile Forbes

Getting pregnant for me was as easy as counting to 14. Really. You see, this pregnancy was planned out and I managed to get pregnant the very first month that we tried. My parents had warned me growing up that the Forbes’ were fertile (in other words, no sex before marriage). I had believed them. I believed them to the point that I planned maybe a year ago to get pregnant in August or September 2006, figuring that would give us time to get the house painted. Relatives and my mom’s friends laughed at me when I confidently told them that I was going to get pregnant in August or September 2006. When we finished painting the outside of the house at the beginning of July 2006, I moved the date up. I decided that I wanted to get pregnant that month, before my 30th birthday on August 5, 2006. That gave us just one try to get the job done. And we succeeded! (Sorry if this was more information than you wanted to know, but you apparently kept reading.)

Baby Olson

Andy and I are thrilled to report that I’m pregnant. I’m considered 16 weeks pregnant as of October 23rd. The picture of our baby below was taken three weeks ago. Now our little darling is already quite a bit bigger. Probably about 5 inches long. The baby is due on April 7, 2007, but will be taken out a week or so earlier via Caesarean. Andy is holding out hope that the baby is a boy. We’ll probably know in about 4 weeks.

We Interupt this Interuption

I had some trouble with this site. several weeks ago, I upgraded the operating system on the computer that this site is on, or so I thought. It turned out to be a partial upgrade, and some of the software broke, including the database program that stores all of these posts. Since Jessica and I are both bad at keeping this site up to date, neither of us noticed until just a few days ago.

Jessica has a friend in town from Germany. He told me that he came to the site to catch up on any new news we may have shared, but that the site was down. It was the first that I had seen or heard about it, and it led me to check it out.

Thanks to my friend Craig, the guy who helps me with all my Linux problems (very graciously, I might add) for helping me get everything back in working order.

If any of you ever notice any problems with this site, or see that something doesn’t look right, please email me – andy at andyandjess.net and let me know.
